Purification Systems for Isolating Patients in Negative Pressure Airborne
Infectious Isolation Rooms or Positive Pressure Protective Environments
Abatement Technologies® offers an array of engineering control products for healthcare facilities designed for conversion of virtually any room into a CDC-compliant, negative pressure Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR) for infectious patients, or into a positive pressure Protective Environment (PE) for highly-sensitive patients. Used today in more than 5,000 medical facilities worldwide, Abatement Technologies Patient Isolation Products enable hospitals to add patient isolation surge capacity to new or existing facilities faster and at a fraction of the cost of designing and building additional isolation rooms with dedicated HVAC systems, and with far less facility disruption. Abatement systems are utilized in a number of ways to meet CDC/HICPAC and CSA Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Healthcare Facilities.
HEPA-CARE® HEPA Filtration Systems – Setting the Standard for Reliable and Economical Airborne Infection Control Solutions for More Than 25 Years
HEPA-CARE
Systems can help facilities protect patients and staff from the transmission
of infectious airborne agents three ways. First, they capture droplet nuclei
and other airborne pathogens in a certified, 99.99% efficiency Type A HEPA
filter. Second, they can be used to create negative or positive pressure
(relative to surrounding space), to prevent pathogen migration from “dirty”
areas into “clean” areas of the facility. Third, they exhaust HEPA clean
air out of the patient room, preferably directly to the outdoors.
Both portable and ceiling-mounted (fixed) HEPA-CARE models provide transmission-based precautions to reduce the spread of airborne pathogens. Portable models, which can be quietly rolled to wherever they are needed within the facility, provide the ultimate in flexibility. Ceiling-mounted models require no floor space and are completely out of the way of patients and staff. Other Abatement Technologies products for effective in-room patient isolation include:
- HEPA-CARE Germicidal UV (UVGI) Modules - For added protection against airborne pathogens
- Wall-Mounted and Portable Differential Pressure Monitors - To ensure that proper room pressure relationships are maintained
- ANTE UP® & AIRE GUARDIAN® Anteroom Transition Modules - To provide buffer space between the “dirty” patient room and adjacent clean spaces
- ISOQUAD® IQ200 Patient Bed Isolation Module - For isolating an individual patient on a hospital bed or gurney
- Additional Airborne Particle Control Products - To capture and control potentially harmful airborne particles and particles that settle onto floors and other surfaces
Negative Pressure Isolation Containment in AIIR
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends negative pressure containment in airborne infection isolation rooms for patients with known or suspected infectious diseases that spread via airborne droplet nuclei such as:

Other patient treatment areas that can benefit from in-room negative pressure isolation with HEPA-CARE systems include:
- Bronchoscopy Suites
- Endotracheal Intubation and Extubation
- Open Suctioning of Airways
- Invasive Vascular Procedures
- ER Triage & Treatment Rooms
- Waiting Areas
- Morgue/Autopsy
While acute care facilities are especially likely to encounter infectious patients, other potential at-risk healthcare facilities can benefit greatly from HEPA air purification and negative pressure containment and/or HEPA air cleaning and recirculation. These include:
- Outpatient Surgical Centers
- Urgent Care Centers
- Clinics
- Outpatient Dialysis Centers
- Physicians’ Offices
- Skilled Nursing Facilities
- Long-Term Care Facilities
- Rehabilitation Centers
- Hospices
- School Clinics
- Infirmaries

Positive Pressure Protective Environments (PE)
The CDC recommends positive pressure PE for isolating and protecting highly-sensitive
patients with immunologic disorders from exposure to health-threatening
airborne particles that may contain bacterial and fungal spores and aspergillus.
PE for highly sensitive patients includes:
- Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT)
- Immunologic Disorders (HIV)
- Immunosuppressive Therapy
- Chronic Diseases (Diabetes, Cancer, Emphysema)
Potential applications where Abatement Technologies HEPA-CARE air purification systems can be used effectively to capture airborne pathogens and create positive pressure environments include surgical suites, ICU, burn units, bone marrow transplant, laboratories and pharmaceutical labs.

Abatement Technologies Products for Healthcare Facility Construction & Renovation Zones
Construction,
renovation and repair activities can disturb contaminants and release them
into the air, including dust particles containing fungal spores such as
aspergillus and bacterial spores. Once aerosolized, these pathogens can
cause harmful infections in patients with weakened immune systems.
Abatement Technologies offers a comprehensive line of Particle Containment Products for Construction & Renovation Zones designed to isolate and capture fungal spores and other potentially harmful airborne contaminants. Products include:
